6 sports commission staff in Marawi evacuated

SIX personnel of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) who were conducting a sports consultative workshop in Marawi City, where an encounter between government troops and the Maute Group transpired Tuesday, were evacuated to a safer place.

This was bared by PSC Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez in a media interview Wednesday afternoon, May 24, at the sidelines of the Barangay Sports Education Forum at The Royal Mandaya Hotel in Davao City.

He said, "We have to cancel the consultative workshop because of what happened in Marawi. We also facilitated the safe evacuation of our staff who were escorted by the military out of Marawi."

Ramirez said his chief-of-staff Ronnel Abrenica fetched the evacuated staff in Cagayan de Oro City as of Wednesday, May 24.

"This is very sad, really. But we will continue with our Sports for Peace program and grassroots sports development program. We will return to Marawi once the current situation stabilizes," Ramirez added.

Aside from the sports consultative workshop, a coaches' seminar was also held on the side.

PSC commissioner Celia Kiram led the PSC contingent in Marawi City but Ramirez said the former was able to leave early before the clashes struck the city.

PSC commissioner Charles Raymond Maxey also said he would have been a part of the PSC group that went to Marawi City but he begged off because he has a part in the Barangay Sports Education Forum in Davao City.
