EDWARD Yap and Ji-Eam Cuizon earned knockout victories over their respective opponents in the Empire Fight Night held at the Empire Boxing Davao Gym along Quimpo Blvd. Ecoland, Davao City on Saturday evening.
Yap won via technical knockout over Paolo Uy in the first round to qualify for the upcoming amateur boxing event in September.
Cuizon, meanwhile, stopped Yuya Yamamura in the second round to earn a spot in the upcoming bout.
Abran Tinagan, on the other hand, earned a unanimous decision victory in his main event bout against Albert Lactaoen while Hans Potente also won via unamious decision over Jordan Diamante.
The bout between Sun.Star Davao editor Edward Lactaoen and Jeff Villavelez, however, was held to a draw.
Empire Boxing Davao owner Fraz Pasquil told Sun.Star Davao in an interview that the Fight Night will serve as qualifier in preparation for the upcoming main event to be held in September.
“In preparation to for the main event this September, we are providing a venue for them to gauge their skill level and their standing when it comes to sparring rounds. I am expecting the fighters to fight not like amateurs but rather pros. I want to see them control and pick their shots unlike amateurs who just throw punches,” Pasquil said.
He also said they had already staged a boxing event last year but he is expecting more bouts for this year’s main event.
“Last year we also had a fight night then after a few months we had the main event. So during the main event we had around eight matches. But for the main event this year, we are expecting more bouts and better fighters,” Pasquil added.
