2 Abu Sayyafs die, 3 hurt in Basilan clash

TWO suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits were killed while three civilian volunteers were wounded in a clash in the hinterlands of Basilan, the military reported.

Captain Jo-ann Petinglay, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) information officer, said the clash occurred around 12:50 p.m. Wednesday at Sitio Patugo in the village of Guinanta, Al-Barka, Basilan province.

Petinglay said the members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT) were on security patrol when they encountered 13 fully-armed Abu Sayyaf bandits led by Sarwin Kasaran.

The bandits belong to the group of Abu Sayyaf sub-leader Nurhassan Jamiri.

Petinglay said the firefight lasted for about two hours and resulted in the death of two bandits who were identified as Nasirin Awwalin and Hasmin Lajid.

She identified the wounded BPAT members as Haisamn Awwal, 35; Asrap Ahung, 21; and Akung Estani, 26. They were brought to the hospital for treatment. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
