City to build more classrooms

THE implementation of the Department of Education’s (DepEd) K to 12 program in Cagayan de Oro remains on track despite the many challenges, City Mayor Oscar Moreno said.

Moreno said the city is working to meet the added pressure to build more classrooms to cope with the projected increase in the number of secondary school students.

Some 17,000 students are expected to enter senior high school (SHS) in the next two school years. Ninety percent of them will have to be accommodated in the city’s public schools.

But in a speech on Independence Day Moreno said he remains confident the city, together with the DepEd, can meet the challenges.

He took a swipe at his detractors, saying the city has been able to fill the need for more classrooms despite opposition from his political rivals.

Moreno said his administration has built 309 classrooms in its first 20 months of office. Lynyrd Aleksei N. Corrales
