Undoc: Transport strike to push through

DIEGO Malacad, secretary-general of United Negros Drivers and Operators Center, said Friday, May 26, that the two-day transport strike set on June 5 and 6 will push through despite the warning of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

“There's nothing new to that. They have been giving such warning every time we hold a transport strike,” Malacad said.

LTFRB-Western Visayas Regional Director Richard Osmeña, who met with local transport groups in Bacolod City Thursday, May 25, said the “no strike” policy is stipulated in Memorandum Circular 2011-004 attached to the approval of franchise given to operators.

Osmeña said they will issue a show-cause order to transport operators found violating their mandate.

Malacad said that instead of issuing such statement, the LTFRB should instead listen to their concerns first and look for means to address the problem.

The transport sector will hold a protest to the move of the government to phase out transport utility vehicles which turn 15 years old starting next month.

Malacad added that despite the appeal of the Department of Education not to push through with the transport strike during the opening of classes for public schools, they will go on with their plan because they also want everyone to realize the importance of public transport vehicles.

“We are asking everyone to cooperate with us. We are firm in our stand,” he said.
