VIRAL: 'Hulog-hulog Piso' strikes inside passenger jeepney

A VIDEO clip showing three men believed to be conniving to victimize a female passenger inside a jeepney in Cebu City by dropping loose change is circulating on the Internet.

Senior Insp. David Señor, Theft and Robbery Section (TRS) chief of Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said they will look into the video that showed the four men employing the modus operandi “Laglag Barya”.

“We will check the video so we could identify the suspects,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.

Sun.Star Cebu has blurred the images of the three men in the video until their identities are ascertained.

The clip, uploaded to YouTube by user Astig Tao, has been viewed more than 17,000 times already as of 6:30 p.m. today.

Astig Tao wrote that the video was taken last Friday, June 12 inside a jeepney plying the route 13C that traverses Barangay Talamban to downtown Cebu City and vice versa.

The video showed a woman sitting in between three men, with one of the three man deliberately dropping a coin.

The victim, unaware of the modus operandi, moved closer to the other two suspects as the other one fumbled to pick up the coin.

The two other men were seated beside each other and appeared to be observing the man trying to pick up the coin. One of them was holding a black backpack, which he used to cover his right arm. The other man, with a heavy build, appeared to be a lookout.

One minute into the video, the clip showed the man with the backpack holding what looked like a white wallet. He can also be seen checking the contents of the wallet.

Modus

Astig Tao also wrote that four men were involved in the incident, but the fourth suspect couldn't be seen in the video.

Sun.Star Cebu tried to contact Astig Tao, but the uploader has yet to answer questions regarding the post.

Señor, for his part, said they noticed that these groups have been victimizing jeepney passengers going to Escario St., Barangay Talamban and downtown Cebu City.

“It's porbably because most of the passengers are those who are going to malls,” he said.

Señor said they have arrested some suspects pulling off the same modus operandi, but were mostly released from police custody because the victims wouldn't pursue pressing charges against them.

Most of these groups, he said, came from Mindanao.

Recently, CCPO, through its Police Community Relations (PCR), posted stickers that exposed several forms of theft that usually occur in jeepneys and in the streets, including those perpetrated by the laglag barya and bubble gum gangs.
