DENR propagates 16.1 million seedlings in Cordillera

THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Cordillera together with peoples organizations and environmentalist groups propagated a total of 16,110,617 seedlings of different species including bamboo.

The DENR’s seedling propagation started January this year as part of the enhanced National Greening Program.

Abra has propagated a total of 6,295,442; Apayao with 955,473, Benguet with 2,420,209, Ifugao with 1,224,991, Kalinga with 2,996,483, and Mt. Province with 2,218,019.

“Through the program, we will be helping plant more trees in our mountains and we will be assured of the many benefits we will get,” DENR- Cordillera Regional Director Ralph Pablo said.

From the National Greening Program of the government which started in 2011, a total of 67,990,624 seedlings were already planted in the region from the 104,775 hectares.

“There are areas with high survival rates and if seedlings were planted during the rainy days have more chances of survival and also the way how the seedlings were planted,” Pablo said.

To combat the effects of climate change, the official reminded everyone to plant more trees in order to take more carbon out of the atmosphere as long as the trees are planted in the right place.

A single tree can absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of 48 lb. per year. Carbon dioxide is a natural greenhouse gas in the atmosphere and is in part responsible for the earth’s relatively climate change. Trees act as natural pollution filters by absorbing pollutants through the stomata in leaf surfaces. It also lowers temperature by transpiring water and shading surfaces.

The official also reminded that trees contribute to the environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil and supporting wildlife.
