Echaves: Streams

A FAVORITE pastime many moons ago with my friends and classmates was to start a conversation on one topic and see where it led us. No structures, no set directions, no realignments, just an aimless flow of thoughts, like a fast-moving mind stream.

“Ah, Henry James’ stream of consciousness method,” our writer friends would say. No, no, no; nothing fancy nor pretentious; just friends yapping about one thing first and then flowing to who knows where.

The real challenge for was tracing back the meandering to its roots, and succeed. That was fun in itself.

So, yesterday while we thought about the St. Theresa’s College homecoming, my fellow alumnae agreed to visit the textile stores and examine the clothing materials, then decide. Time flies, yes.

Shall it be June 2, one suggested. Sure, why not; that’s this Friday already; good!....Whoa….that’s the NBA finals Game 1 between Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors. No, I cannot miss that. I’m an incurable LeBron James fan, and I must watch this game at 9:30 a.m. on Channel 8.

Huh? The Cavaliers are the underdogs? Who says so? Because Golden State has Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and now Kevin Durant? Curry, Thompson and Durant are clean players. Durant is LeBron’s good friend and Olympic teammate, and just wants a championship ring. Isn’t that why he left Oklahoma City Thunder?

Besides, LeBron is in the league of basketball legends Larry Bird, Tim Duncan, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan in total playing minutes. But he’s better because even as he approaches 55,000 + minutes, he’s the only one without injuries. The rest had to retire.

And that’s principally because he takes good care of his physique, grows stronger game after game. He also invests in technology like the cryo chamber to attend to inflammations caused by exercises and hard hits during games.

So at 19 years old, he had the body of an NBA veteran. He drinks only during victory rites, eats healthy and reads up on ways of preserving his health.

But Green? He’s rough, rude, ma-drama, and too much braggadocio…

Much like Donald J. Trump. U.S. President he might be, but didn’t you see him push aside Montenegero’s Prime Minister Dusko Markovic at the Nato headquarters in Brussels? Obviously, he wanted to hog full attention so he inserted himself to the center of the group. The nerve!

Then there’s that handshake with France’s newly elected President Emmanuel Macron. He grabbed the latter’s hand, pulled it towards him, and held long. Poor Macron; there will be more handshakes like that.

But that’s the least of Macron’s concerns for now. There’s the “paningil” from the boastful Trump to contribute more to NAato’s defense program.

If he grows some honesty back in U.S. soil and watches that video footage, he’d see Macron, and the prime ministers of Luxembourg and Belgium whispering among themselves. And there was UK Prime Minister Theresa May scowling, perhaps saying who does this oaf think he is; Hans Solo?

A moment; where was I?
