Aquarelle happiness

A FRESH take on the vivacity of an underrated art medium is “Happy Watercolorful Summer.” In cooperation with Ayala Center Cebu, the show was mounted by Cebu Artists Inc. (CAI) in line with the former’s theme for the “recently concluded” season.

Although seemingly inferior to mainstream weapons like oil and acrylic, watercolor is an unforgiving medium. Many artists admit that it needs patience, a lot of it.

The strokes and layers have to be cautiously analyzed before application. Most of the time, a single, trivial mistake means starting all over again. But when the ropes are mastered, what turns out is a grand output; happiness that is, as depicted by the subjects in each painting. Defying the summer heat was a set bathed in delightful concepts and neat details revolving around everyday musings with nature as dominant presentation.

Inviting for happy thoughts were the vibrant tones and splashes of 56 watercolor pieces by Julieto Angana, Darby Alcoseba, Arnel Belda, Karby Beloy, Irvin Benlot, Gina Castillo, Pronie de la Cerna, Rhodesa Cruzet, Jess Dinglasa, John Dinglasa, Efren Enolva, Luther Galicano and Bobby Gonzales.

Rounding off the list were Ana Maria Lubanga, Juan Guido Lubanga, Eli Manongas, Melver Mercado, Jess Najarro, Renulo Pautan, Celso Pepito, Jojo Sagayno, Enrico Santisas, Antonio Vidal, Jose “Kimsoy” Yap, Pempe Ybañez, Marlon Ylanan and Sonia Yrastorza.

“Happy Watercolorful Summer” ran from May 15 until the second week of June at the third Level of Ayala Center Cebu.
