Diarrhea outbreak in Bilibid kills 2

AN OUTBREAK of diarrhea has killed two inmates inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City, a Department of Justice (DOJ) official said Thursday.

In a text message, Justice Undersecretary Erickson Balmes said the inmates, both male, have died due to dehydration, hypovolemic shock and Diabetes Type 2.

The fatalities were identified as Virgilio Sabado, 62, died on Wednesday; while Sabas Lastimoso, 67, died early Thursday morning.

He said the diarrhea outbreak started inside the NBP's maximum and medium security compounds last Friday, May 26.

Authorities are now looking into the cause of the outbreak, he said.

Aside from the two fatalities, the NBP has attended to over a thousand inmates due to the diarrhea outbreak.

"There are now 1,212 diarrhea cases in Bilibid," he said.

Balmes said the DOJ has already provided medicines from the Department of Health that will rehydrate the inmates suffering from the disease. (SunStar Philippines)
