ZAMBOANGA City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar declared that she is not in favor of reviving the numbers game locally known as ‘wahoy.’
Salazar issued the statement following a City Council proposal to revive and legalize wahoy to help preserve and propagate the Chavacano language through riddles.
Salazar said she finds the move ridiculous stressing that legislating gambling is a big no.
Wahoy is a known local numbers game with 37 (1 to 37) numbers to bet. Each number from 1 to 37 represents a kind of animal.
A peso bet wins P30; the results of which was based on riddles in Chavacano given daily.
Salazar stressed that the City Government has produced a number of books and has undertaken and continues to undertake programs and projects to advocate the preservation of the Chavacano language. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
