LTFRB to resume franchises soon

THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) will soon remove the moratorium for public utility vehicles (PUVs).

LTFRB 7 Ahmed Cuizon said the signing of the Omnibus Franchise Guidelines will pave the way for the lifting of the moratorium for the issuance of PUV franchises.

The guidelines will be signed into law on June 19, the 30th anniversary celebration of LTFRB.

Cuizon said that there are at least 27,000 to 28,000 PUVs in Region 7, 70 percent of which are concentrated in Metro Cebu.

There are now 6,137 taxi units, 17,000 passenger jeepneys and 700 buses in Central Visayas.

For taxi units alone, LTFRB issued a moratorium of 5,000 units for about 15 years ago. But at present, the public complained that there’s a need to increase the number of taxi units because they can hardly get one during office hours.

However, taxi drivers also complained that they cannot get passengers especially in hotels and resorts because of Uber and Grab units.

On the other hand, Cuizon thanked leaders and members of Pagkakaisa ng Samahan ng Tsuper and Operators Nationwide (PISTON) for making a march-rally instead of transport strike.

Gregorio Perez said they are opposing the plan of LTFRB to phase out old jeepneys 15 years and older by 2020.

Cuizon said the concern of Piston will become inputs of DOTr and LTFRB in making transport policies.
