Environment Month underscores stronger people-nature connection

THE observance of Environment Month in Negros Island Region (NIR) underscores the need for building stronger connection between the people and nature amid continuous call to protect the earth, an official of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said.

Livino Duran, officer-in-charge regional director of DENR-NIR, in a press conference at the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro) in Barangay 39, Bacolod City Monday, June 5, said the challenge for environment protection is crucial thus, there is a pressing need to move together.

He said strengthening involvement in various endeavors that would address “serious” environmental problems should be realized by Negrenses.

“This month-long celebration calls us to become stewards for the environment by actively participating in the protection and conservation of environment,” Duran said, adding that taking part can be as small as waste segregation at home, reporting illegal logging and poaching practices, and joining local and regional activities, among others.

Through the month-long observance, the DENR wants to bring in people to appreciate their environment by reconnecting with nature.

By imparting the beauty of environment, the DENR-NIR is optimistic to further encourage love for nature among Negrenses.

“We really wanted to solicit participation at different levels of society,” Duran said, adding that among the current major environment problems in Negros include illegal logging, issues on land claims, rampant killings of endangered animals like sea turtles, and fishkill brought by water pollution, among others.

Themed “Connecting People to Nature” with “I am with nature” slogan, region-wide activities slated for the Environment Month this June are positioned to provide strategic significance for NIR.

On June 14 and 15, there will be lecture-series in selected public schools. A lecture on laws and policies with forestry students at Negros Oriental State University will also be held on June 28.

Other activities include marine turtle forum at Apo Island Protected Landscape and Seascape on June 20; Scubasurero: Marine and coastal clean-up on June 21; region-wide tree planting and growing on June 25; and multi-sectoral forest protection committee meeting on June 27.

Penro-Negros Occidental is also initiating various activities including the biodiversity monitoring system and the synchronized hornbill counting on June 20.

Last June 1, it signed a memorandum of agreements with University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos and STI West Negros University for the provision of orientation on the laws, policies and programs of DENR to further involve the students and faculty.
