BACOLOD City's Irene Therese Bermejo snatched a silver medal for the Philippines after losing to Truong Thi Kim Tuyen of Vietnam, 19-7 in the finals of the women’s taekwondo-46 kilograms in the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore.

The multi-titled Palarong Pambansa champion and erstwhile Trinity Christian School mainstay dominated Nway of Myanmar in the quarterfinals, 16-7 before demolishing Chew Xin Wei of host-Singapore in the semifinals, 29-5.

Bermejo is the 14th national player from Bacolod and Negros Occidental to win a medal for the Philippines.

Earlier, the Philippines women’s softball team retained its title convincingly winning over their Thailand rivals, 3-0 in the finals. The Blu Girls also blanked the Thais in the elimination, 9-2.

The Philippines is undefeated in the SEA Games since this event was held in 1971 (Indonesia), 2005 (Philippines), 2007 (Thailand), and 2011 (Indonesia).

In the preliminaries, the Blu Girls routed Indonesia (6-0), Malaysia (12-0) and Singapore twice (8-1 and 10-0).

Wearing the national colors are Negrense batters and former standouts of Domingo Lacson National High School in Bacolod City are pitchers Veronica Belleza, Annalie Benjamen and Rizza Bernardino; outfielders/infielders Marlyn Francisco and Luzviminda Embudo; outfielders Elma Parohinog, Queeny Sabobo, and Florabele Pabiania; and rookie catcher Ma. Celestine Palma.

Negrense boxers Ian Clark Bautista (Binalbagan), Junel Cantancio (Bago City), Rogen Ladon (Bago City) and Riza Pasuit (Bacolod City) also won medals for the Philippines.(HGD)
