Brgy. 38, Bacolod fire victims need more assistance

FIRE victims at Purok Sampaguita, Barangay 38 in Bacolod City are asking for assistance, the Department of Social Services Development (DSSD) said.

Social Worker Officer IV Sally Abelarde on Thursday, June 8, said a total of 46 individuals need food, kitchenware, clothes, beddings, and pillows.

Of the 46 affected individuals, five were house sharers and four renters.

At about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, the fire hit eight houses. Six were destroyed while two were damaged.

Abelarde said two residents sustained minor injuries.

She said the City Government already provided food assistance to the affected families, who evacuated to the barangay hall. Some of them were staying with their relatives.

Abelarde added that their food assistance is only good for four to five days and they need more help.

The DSSD will submit a proposal to Mayor Evelio Leonardia to provide a financial assistance for the fire victims.

These include P10,000 for those whose houses were destroyed, P5,000 for those with damaged houses, and P3,000 for house sharers and renters.

Abelarde said social workers are accepting donations at the Barangay 38 Hall.

The Bureau of Fire Protection said the blaze left an estimated P500,000 worth of damage.

Injured were Glenn Celis, his wife, Joan, and father Danielo, Ana Fe Barreño, and another neighbor. All sustained minor burns.

Senior Fire Officer 2 Archie Españo, chief of Investigation and Intelligence Section of BFP-Bacolod, said the fire broke out around 8:30 p.m. from the bedroom of Celis’s house.

The fire was put out after an hour.

Españo said the fire was allegedly caused by an unattended mosquito coil. (MAP/GYM)
