Mongaya: Tragedy in Bohol

CAPTAIN Giselle Bendong-Boniel would have wanted to return to flying than running Bien Unido town as mayor. I remember her as that cheerful face of Philippines AirAsia where she distinguished herself as the airline’s first female pilot. Instead, she died violently the other day.

As of this writing, her body is yet to be found after it was dumped into the sea near Mactan Island. She was reportedly kidnapped from Bien Unido town at dawn Thursday. Police arrested her husband Bohol Board Member Niño Boniel, their prime suspect.

It took me some time to absorb what was happening when I first watched her friend Angela Leyson narrated her version of the incident inside a Bien Unido resort as aired over FB Live. The couple, Giselle and Niño, are my friends.

I hope justice for Giselle will prevail even as Niño deserves due process.

Coverage via FB Live by local reporters would go a long way in giving Cebuanos the benefit of getting news real time. However, reporters should also be conscious that the public also gets to see and hear them in action. Di unta magpataka lang og yawit samtang dunay nag-live.

Come to think of it, FB Live is changing news coverage and the newspaper audience. I am looking forward to the near future that this will transform into pressure on the telcos to speed up our country’s Internet. Naiwit na ta oi.

Ordinary citizens who figured in an elevator accident in SM City the other day are resorting to Facebook in airing what happened after mall personnel reportedly tried to have a video of the incident deleted. A photo of the incident was posted by netizensdaily.com.

Some 12 people reportedly were inside an elevator when it fell from the third to the second floor. They expressed disappointment when responding mall personnel showed more concern on the state of the elevator and the video than the situation of the 12 elevator passengers.

Danao City Mayor Nito Durano has won another victory in his fight against a three-month suspension ordered by the Ombudsman-Visayas. The Court of Appeals has converted the temporary restraining order issued by a Regional Trial Court that stopped into a writ of preliminary injunction on the suspension of Mayor Nito Durano of Danao City.

To recall, the CA stopped the Ombudsman from suspending Durano for three months without pay. This stemmed from a case where Durano allegedly refused to pay the back wages and leave credits of seven City Hall employees in 2013.

However, before the Ombudsman’s suspension, Mayor Durano had already reinstated and paid the back wages of the concerned employees prior to the Ombudsman order to suspend him.

With the latest CA order, the suspension can no longer be implemented. Moreover, the CA denied the Ombudsman’s move to recall the restraining order and opposition to the preliminary injunction.

In my tinamban thinking, with the private complainants are already satisfied, murag padung na gyud pagka-dismiss ang kaso. Sakto ba ko atorni?
