Benguet councilor rallies against e-bingo

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Councilor Nestor Fongwan Jr. has signified his stand on keeping the valley free from Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) endorsed gaming within the province capital.

Fongwan Jr. during the last council session signified his opposition to the application of three for e-bingo games ready to be heard for public consultation.

The lawmaker said he is being consistent to his no gambling stance.

“It will have ill effects to the family,” said Fongwan choosing to reveal how he will vote when the time comes for the council to decide on the matter.

Applications from Elan Recreation, headed by Raymundo Nazario, Leonora David Basbas of the David-Basbas Gaming Enterprise Corporation and Lolita Cabahug of the Cabahug Gaming Enterprise for the conduct of traditional and electronic bingo games in the municipality.

Nazario identified two sites, the SM Savemore building and the cockpit area at Shilan while Basbas eyes to operate at Palangdao Building at Kilometer 4 and Cabahug has yet to identify the location of her gaming business.

Fongwan said the eradication of covert, guerilla style “jueteng” may still be happening in the valley, saying the age old problem of illegal numbers game survives despite efforts to curtail its operations.

There are no government sanctioned gaming centers in the Valley since the 2010, as consultation with stakeholders is being scheduled later this month to get the sentiments of the people and for the council to decide on the applications of the three gaming companies.
