AN ELUSIVE suspected leader of a criminal gang who is facing murder cases was captured after a brief shootout with the police in a southern town of Cebu Sunday morning.
The police said William Salonoy, 40, was arrested in Barangay Agbalanga, Moalboal town at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 18.
Moalboal police chief Jose Rovic Villarin said the suspect is number one in the most wanted list of Dalaguete Police Station.
Salonoy has two pending murder cases before the sala of Argao Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 26 Judge Maximo Perez and one in Surigao City RTC Branch 30 Judge Victor Casoy.
Police officers of Moalboal and Dalaguete towns first served the warrants of arrest issued by Perez and Casoy to the suspect at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 17.
When the suspect noticed the arresting officers, he opened fire at them.
The policemen retaliated and hit Salonoy, who ran into the woods.
The wounded suspect was eventually caught by the authorities the following day, June 18.
In October 2014, Salonoy was part of the armed men who engaged in a shootout with the police in simultaneous raids in the mountainous parts of Alcoy and Dalaguete towns.
He escaped with three other men, while three of his comrades were killed. Ten others were arrested. (SunStar Philippines/SunStar Cebu)
