Inspect cinemas, report to City Hall: mayor to operators

THEATER operators in Cebu City have one week to inspect their facilities and submit a report to City Hall's Office of the Building Official for evaluation.

Mayor Michael Rama gave these orders in a closed-door meeting this morning with theater managers. The meeting was an offshoot of Monday's incident at Cinema 5 in Ayala Center Cebu.

He also told them to come up with measures to prevent a similar incident from happening.

The meeting was attended by representatives from Ayala Center Cebu, Gaisano Country Mall and Oriente Theater.

In an interview after the meeting, Rama said he also directed Vice Mayor Edgar Labella and the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CCDRRMC) to inspect all skyscrapers to address emergency situations, like top floors getting caught in fire.

Earlier, City Hall inspectors and Ayala Center Cebu management said water from its sprinkler system caused part of the ceiling inside Cinema 5 to give way, injuring nine people as a result.

The movie house was rented at that time by Dreamscape Networks, a business process outsourcing company, where about 300 employees attended the launching of its new advertising campaign.
