Jake Zyrus: Goodbye, Charice

THE former Pinay child singer who impressed Ellen DeGeneres and David Foster doesn’t want to be Charice Pempengco anymore. She now wants to be known as Jake Zyrus.

There was no grand announcement or formal launching just a tweet: “My first tweet as Jake. Overwhelmed. Saw all your love and comments and I’m so happy. Finally. I love you, everyone, and see you soon.”

But nobody can please everybody. So for those who disapproved of the change, Zyrus tweeted to her over 900,000 followers: “I won’t let anyone ruin this moment. I won’t let anyone ruin my happiness. Thank you to all the beautiful write-ups about me.”

According to the Philippine Entertainment Portal, the Zyrus identity was born last Thursday through the change in social media name. The first tweet was sent Tuesday.

GMA News also reported that Zyrus has deleted all previous tweets under Pempengco’s name as well as all of her photos including those of ex-girlfriend Alyssa Quijano, who Zyrus broke up with last April.

On Instagram, Zyrus has just one photo of a blue background with the words “Thank You.” She captioned the photo: “From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the love and respect. I love you back and I’m sending peace to everyone.”

Zyrus came out as a lesbian in 2013 through an interview with Boy Abunda.

Zyrus’ transformation also comes at a great time as the world celebrates Pride Month.
