HONORED with the Sotero B. Cabahug Excellence Awards last month was Eugene Dadol, a magna cum laude graduate, BS in Secondary Education-Physics-Mathematics, from the University of San Carlos.

Guadalupe Cabahug Latonio, the youngest child of the late Justice Sotero B. Cabahug, handed out the award during afternoon ceremonies in front of his statue in Mandaue City. The activity was coordinated by the Society of Cabahug medalists headed by its president, Visitacion Flores Mendoza.

The late Sotero B. Cabahug is Mandaue’s most distinguished son and he is always remembered in a special way by Madauehanons on April 22, his birthday. This year, he would have been 127 years old. The grand old man of Mandaue had served in the three branches of government...as representative of Cebu’s second district, governor of Cebu, secretary of Public Works, secretary of National Defense, and justice of the Court of Appeals.

In 1923, he instituted the awarding of the Cabahug medal, a gold medal awarded to the Mandauehanon with the highest academic honors for the year. This has become a tradition that his heirs have continued to this day.

It was celebration time for the Chiongbian family when the grand matriarch of the clan, Felisa Chiongbian, turned 96 years old. She was surrounded by loving children and grandchildren with their spouses, and great-grandchildren at her home. Though no longer as active and visible as in previous years, she continues to support her favorite charities. Cheers to our favorite philanthropist!
