411 modified mufflers destroyed

AT least 411 modified mufflers or “bora-bora” were destroyed by police and local officials of Minglanila town, Cebu yesterday.

The mufflers were seized from motorcycle drivers in a series of police checkpoints launched this month.

Leading the ceremony were Supt. Dexter Calacar, Minglanilla police chief; Mayor Elanito Peña and Vice Mayor Robert John Selma.

Calacar said that the campaign aims to inform motorcycle owners that installing modified mufflers on their units is illegal.

He cited the town’s anti-noise ordinance and Republic Act 4136 (Land Transportation and Traffic Code) as basis of campaign against motorcycle owners who install modify mufflers.

Under the municipal ordinance, a violator can be fined with P500 cash and the confiscation of the modified muffler.

RA 4136, on the other hand, provides stiffer penalties, including a fine of P5,000.
