Davao approves stricter ordinance for PWDs access

THE Davao City Council approved on Tuesday, June 20, the ordinance requiring primary and secondary tourism enterprises to give accessibility and service to persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre during the Pulong-Pulong ni Pulong media forum said that the ordinance will not only cater those on wheel chair but also the deaf-mute.

He added that the ordinance aims to assist PWDs in the airport.

Alejandre said that the primary and secondary tourism enterprise will not need to pay more on training their staff on front line services because the City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) will offer the free training.

"They will just need to send representatives, na i-train sa (to be trained for) deaf mute sign language by the CSSDO," he said.

The councilor said that enterprises, who will not comply with the ordinance will face permit revocation in the business bureau.

The ordinance covers classified primary tourism enterprises, which refer to services directly related or involved in tourism such as hotels, resorts, self-styled accommodation establishment, pension house/inn, travel agency, tour operator, tourist transport operations, ticketing agent/ticketing company, tour guide.

Secondary tourism enterprises like restaurants, malls, shops, department store, sports and recreational activities, ecotourism, health and wellness center, museum, themed park, marina, and government offices are also likewise covered.

The councilor said that they also eye send letters to hotel establishments which also do not follow accessibility law.
