Choir, Quiz highlight Dia de Fundacion de Chavacano

THE city of Zamboanga celebrated on Friday, June 23, the Chavacano language, one of the pillars of Zamboangueño culture, with the culminating competitions which marked the 6th Dia de Fundacion de Chavacano.

The second Chavacano Speech Choir and the first Chavacano Quiz Bee competitions headlined the Dia de Fundacion de Chavacano, an annual event which recognizes the Chavacano language and its founding, and aims to preserve and promote its usage among residents and new settlers.

The Regional Science High School retained its crown as the Chavacano speech choir champion for the second time from a field of six competitors.

Claiming the second and third place were the St. Joseph School and Western Mindanao State University, respectively.

The 2nd Chavacano Speech Choir featured Chavacano piece entitled “Desperta, Zamboanga”.

Winners received P15,000, P10,000, and P5,000, while non-winning finalists received P2,000.

Meanwhile, the Southcom Elementary School and Culianan High School emerged as champions for the elementary and high school category of the 1st Chavacano Quiz Bee competition which was led and facilitated by Dr. Jose Genaro Yap-Aizon, Assistant City Administrator and Special Assistant to the Mayor.
