Hidalgo: Refreshing news amidst troubled times

I AM partial to education as an educator, so, I start with the plans of Commission on Higher Education and Secretary Leonor Briones of Department of Education. It is funding the scholarship grants to qualified applicants to pursue Medicine and Law courses. All the successful graduates of these courses are to serve the citizens. Doctors will be assigned to every barrio to serve the poorest sectors who die without any doctor treating them. The lawyers will serve poor clients to defend them from scheming cheating rich clients who bribe to enable their lawyer to win a case.

All Junior and Senior high school students of the K to 12 Basic Education Plan will be provided with special classrooms or model homes where they can learn through practicum methods their techno-vocational choices. Studies revealed a great number of pupils are very poor in reading. This has to be remedied because not knowing how to read will lead to no comprehension of the lessons. Special curriculums with spelling combined with phonetics should be learned by the teachers. Lastly, all public schools from kinder to high school are free.

Aids and letters to greet soldiers in the Maute siege for Fathers' day were brought by concerned citizens inside Marawi. President Duterte visited wounded soldiers giving them medals of valor and apologizing to them for his absence in the battle grounds. He also provided air flights for wounded soldiers in his presidential plane to be treated in hospitals outside Marawi. I also saw his humane nature in these instances - weeping on his mother's grave to help him through success as elected President; enjoying with his grandchildren during their birthdays; sleeping inside his mosquito net with a table for his medicines and portable oxygen tank, When he sang, "Ikaw" in a duet with a singer in a reception for him. He treated the Japanese Premiere with a taste of Durian. He eats with his hand his favorite dishes in a carinderia. He organized a raffle draw for "pang kabuhayan" jackpot- a tricycle won by a poor family.

The traffic accidents in the main roads were minimized when the rule on jaywalking was proclaimed. Exempted are the PWD's, senior citizens, and pregnant women can use the road lanes. All others under pain of fines or hard labor should use the skywalk. With Martial Law in Mindanao, everyone should have valid IDs. If none, they are considered "persons of interest " and are apprehended.

I commend the public forum organized by Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista. All concerned government personnel attend to discuss ways and means to solve drug problems. The resolutions will be drawn and this will be followed by the citizens. Rehabilitation centers have to be maintained by the government like the one in Nueva Ecija.

Researching for workable means to cure the ills of our present society, I found it in these two videos of The Holy Father Pope Francis, The first is about the arms and war weapons as lucrative money earning business. They want wars so their business thrives. Remove them and there will be peace. The second is about wars of different ideologies or beliefs. There must be unity, understanding, and empathy in diversity. What is evil is the fundamentalism aspect inherent in these groups. ISIS will behead a Christian believing each head is an offering to Allah. Born Again Christians will crash, burn, ruin our religious icons saying we idolize them as God. Extremists or fanatics are the problems. Let Live and let live be the rule.
