WHEN it was first announced that one of the country’s largest real estate developer will build a P30-billion prime property in Pampanga, the local residents expressed various reactions. Ultimately, many believe that the 35.6-hectare project will boost the City of San Fernando’s economic growth. The Megaworld Corporation, also known as one of the leading business and outsourcing or BPO developer, is expected to bring mega locators to generate jobs in Pampanga.
But on the other side, some advocates of heritage preservation have raised concern over what’s left in the almost century-old structure of Pampanga Sugar Development Co. or Pasudeco. For many locals here, Pasudeco’s mill, which stands even after the wrath of Pinatubo eruption, is a testament to the resiliency of the Kapampangan people.
Fortunately, this mega investment plans to include a heritage museum, which will be incorporated in the proposed mall inside the township project. According to Megaworld first vice president for Marketing Eugene Lozano, the suggested museum will house old memorabilia, including artifacts of the Pasudeco. Lozano stressed that Megaworld recognizes the rich history and culture of the province of Pampanga. They want to provide an avenue where one can master and showcase the rich culture and skills that are distinctive of the Kapampangans.
Pasudeco was the first sugar central in the province that was financed by Filipinos. This central was one of the biggest commercial sources that boosted the financial growth of the capital. Lozano also added that monuments of significant people of the province, particularly those who have established Pasudeco, will also be erected in the different parts of the township. The famous chimneys of the old sugar central will also be preserved and included in the planned developments.
Who says history cannot partner with change and development? If all goes well, this township concept could bring out the best of Kapampangans tradition, culture and history in a modern world.
