Innovation roadmap to help small firms

MORE local technologies may now be patronized by local entrepreneurs following the move by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to create an inclusive innovation roadmap.

The two agencies forged an agreement last June 1 to craft a roadmap which aims to inject innovation in industries and level up micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

“This is in line with the thrust of the DTI to promote entrepreneurship and innovation as game changers for the Philippine economy, creating more value, distinction and differentiation of Philippine products with the rest of the world,” the DTI said in a statement.

It believes the adoption of innovation in the MSME sector will allow the players to participate in the global value chain.

DOST undersecretary for research and development (R&D) Rowena Cristina Guevara said locally developed technologies that are now available for commercial use aim to step up business operations, put more value in the products or services being marketed and be responsive to the ever-changing needs of the country.

She hoped more MSMEs would utilize these technologies and incorporate them in their operations to make their ventures productive and profitable. She also assured entrepreneurs of a seamless technology transfer by the technology generators.

“We want everybody to benefit from the resources of these R&D investments,” said Guevara, adding that the results of R&D activities would be used to improve the socio-economic conditions of Filipinos.

Aside from partnering with the DOST, the DTI will tap other agencies such as the Commission on Higher Education, the Department of Information and Communications Technology and concerned stakeholders in formulating an inclusive innovation roadmap.

“Doing this would support our goal of creating globally competitive and innovative industries, attract investments, create more and better jobs, and generate shared prosperity for all,” said DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez in a statement.
