London fire prompts BFP 7 to meet with building officials

AFTER the loss of lives during fire emergencies in Resorts World Manila and in Grenfell Tower in London, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) 7 met with building administrators and safety officers in Central Visayas.

BFP 7 Director Samuel Tadeo said that more than 500 participants attended the meeting, which he said was a good response from the business sector.

“We saw the need to have a dialogue with the building admins and safety officers regarding their compliance in an open forum. When we saw that there was a positive feedback, we decided to organize a summit for another dialogue in August,” Tadeo said.

BFP 7 also inspected high-rise buildings in the region last week. So far there had been no reports about deficiencies in the structures.

“This is a wake-up call after two major incidents resulted in many deaths in Manila and London,” he said.

Engr. Ariel Miranda, chief of fire safety enforcement division of the BFP, said they are hoping to see the creation of an association of building administrators in the region. The association must work together in solving any problem, he said.

Miranda spoke during the meeting and answered questions from hotels, hospitals and the industrial sector in Cebu, Bohol and other islands in the region.
