Interfaith prayer for peace in Marawi held

A REPRESENTATIVE of Cebu’s Muslim communities urged people of different faiths to “respect, protect and love each other” as a way to promote peace.

Ustadz Najib Razul, a member of the Council of Elders of the Metro Cebu Muslim Community and head of the Voice of Islam Foundation, said that unity in Cebu and in the entire country is significant as the nation has been divided due to the violent incidents that occurred in Marawi City more than a month ago.

Razul was one of the speakers during an interfaith prayer rally held at the pilgrim center of the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño in Cebu City yesterday.

It was organized by the Cebu Archdiocesan Commission on Social Advocacies.

While members of the Maute terrorist group allegedly use the teachings of Islam to spread terror, Razul said that is not what the Quran teaches to all Muslims.

“Islam is a religion of peace, not of violence. What does Islam teach? That all human beings are brothers,” Razul said.

Razul also condemned the atrocities done by the Maute group, particularly the killing of Christians in the name of Islam.

“What they are doing is not only against religion, but against the law and humanity,” Razul said.

He urged the public to avoid the notion that Muslims are violent people.

Razul said they, too, shared the pain felt by millions of Filipinos over the atrocities done in Marawi City by members of the Maute Group.

Aside from Razul, representatives from the Catholic Church and other Christian denominations were present during the interfaith prayer rally.

Msgr. Danny Sanico, vicar general of the Archdiocese of Cebu, also echoed Razul’s call.

Sanico, who represented Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, said that he has been saddened by the crisis in Marawi.
