THAT particular Saturday at Café Marco was unlike any other noontime. It was special. The restaurant was packed and with good reason, Davao’s fashion czar Alfonso Guino-o was having his Badu by Alfonso fashion and trunk show.

How long has it been since the last time I caught a luncheon fashion show? I can't remember. Catching this show by a renowned and well-loved Davao designer and enjoying the restaurant’s great spread were good ways to kick-off the weekend.

Marco Polo Davao’s staging of Badu by Alfonso Fashion and Trunk Show is part of its 20th Anniversary Celebration.

“Marco Polo Davao has been embracing the Mindanao culture since it opened in 1998. And we are honored to be the partner of Davao’s fashion czar, Alfonso “Boy” Guinoo in his 68th year in the fashion industry,” said Marco Polo Davao General Manager Dottie Wurgler-Cronin.

Alfonso “Boy” Guinoo is known for championing the indigenous craftsmanship of the lumads in Mindanao and hand woven fabric not only locally but across the globe as well. At the luncheon show, the guests witnessed a modern ethnic ensemble by this premier designer.

Present at the show was Joji Ilagan-Bian, the designer’s good friend and muse. “Tito Boy has been uplifting Mindanao culture and showing it to the world,” she said.

Wearing the designer’s pieces and working the runway were Annabelle Nulla and Jade Nulla, Ma. Socorro Gutierez, Belen Sarmosing Ramirez, Nicole Bian, Jing Puentespina, Danney Barnet, Jasmine Pilo and Princess Barsalote.

The cross-cultural collection was also displayed for sale at the foyer of the second level of the Hotel. Displayed at the trunk show were the Kit Silver Jewelry by international awardee jeweler Mila Imson.
