CHR seeking witnesses in Calatrava shooting

THE Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in Negros Occidental is looking for witnesses in their ongoing investigation into the shooting of a sugarcane field overseer in Calatrava town last week.

CHR provincial head Romeo Baldevarona said they are determining if the shooting of Bolbet Leyte, 42 in Sitio Balea, Barangay Laga-an was “an encounter, an overkill, or a case of mistaken identity.”

“We need to have someone credible to tell us what really happened,” he said.

Baldevarona added that he went to Calatrava last week to conduct an initial investigation, but was able to secure only the report of the municipal police.

“I wanted to go to the area for an ocular inspection but it was already late in the afternoon thus, making it dangerous to proceed to the area,” he said.

However, that was just one side of the story, he said. “I need to get the other side.”

“Unfortunately, the family did not go to the office so we did not get the complete picture of the incident. I urged them to visit me at the CHR," he said.

Leyte succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead on arrival at the Calatrava District Hospital by Dr. Ellen Lumanog, the police records showed.
