Tadian overpowers DepEd in ‘bahagketball’

TADIAN, Mt. Province -- As the town celebrated its 10th Ayyoweng di Lambak ed Tadian, bahagketball, or basketball in g-string has become a top crowd drawer during its weeklong festivity.

Embracing its rich culture and tradition and following the popularization of bahagketball thru social media, tourists and residents alike were delighted to another exhibition game between the local government and the Department of Education which the LGU handily won, 42–36.

DepEd and Tadian started an early shootout from the three point territory courtesy of Marvindo Cabya (DepEd) and Jayson Agayao with the local government leading by as much as 11 at the close of the opening canto.

Tadian continued their onslaught in the second period but DepEd’s Cyril Dogui-is scored before the close of the first half to trim the gap at 30–19.

DepEd slowly got their groove back with Domingo Kani and Mark James San Jose working hand in hand to close the gap at 38–32 going into the payoff period.

But it was the last hurrah for the mentors as the local government stopped DepEd with village chief Leo Ditan nailing the final basket to ensure the win.

Bahagketball has become an integral part of the town’s annual fiesta which was later on institutionalized as a festival with an executive committee formed to oversee the staging of the festival composed of mayor, vice-mayor, local council, tourism officials, department heads and the 19 barangay chairmen.

The group is tasked to implement and evaluate the activities aside from bahagketball such as gating volleyball (traditional wrap around skirt for Igorot women) and other indigenous games during the event.

Tadian Mayor Anthony Wooden said the activity started in the year 2011 as part of the culture and tradition of the people of Tadian.

"They are part of our culture and tradition for it not to be forgotten, it must be continuously celebrated, not only in the agriculture, but also in the games and way of life," said Wooden.

Aside from bahagketball, different indigenous games were also played such as ginuyodan di tali (tug of war), kinnaban di kawayan (palo sebo), inobonan di dagum, and sack race.
