DOTr addresses poor state of Zamboanga airport

ZAMBOANGA City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar has expressed gratitude to President Rodrigo Duterte and Department of Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade for swift action on her request for the National Government to address the poor state of the Zamboanga airport.

Tugade, based on instructions of President Duterte, inspected the airport facilities and ordered the immediate procurement of gang chairs to ensure that passengers will be provided with comfortable seats, as well as new baggage carousel to facilitate efficient baggage handling.

This move to rehabilitate the airport came after Salazar aired concerns about the runway condition and the need for repair to President Duterte during the latter’s visit to the city last Saturday, March 10.

President Duterte immediately called Tugade to fly to Zamboanga and to address the issue.

In a surprise visit to the Zamboanga airport on Sunday, March 11, Tugade expressed dismay over the poor condition of terminal facilities and ordered the immediate repair of the same.

Tugade took note of the small baggage carousel, the lack of appropriate gang chairs and passenger seats at boarding areas as well as multiple potholes as deep as two inches from end of runway 09 to runway 27. (SunStar Philippines)
