TSI celebrates Philippine Environment Month

As part of its commitment to care for the environment, Therma South Inc., a subsidiary of AboitizPower, planted over a thousand trees on Wednesday, June 28, at the 300 megawatt (MW) Davao baseload power plant in the borders of Binugao, Toril, Davao City, and Inawayan, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

A total of 1.96 hectares was been targeted to be planted with 1,347 seedlings, which includes Malobago, Narra, Molave, and Mahogany.

TSI Vice President for Operations and Plant Manager engineer Valentin Saludes III told SunStar Davao in an interview that the tree planting activity is also part of the company's celebration for the Philippine Environment Month, which is spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

He said this is also in partnership with Barangay Binugao in Davao City and Barangay Inawayan in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

Saludes said the tree planting activity is also part of their carbon sink management program (CSMP). The company is implementing the CSMP in Marilog and Paquibato through a partnership with the IP community.

The company also seeks to make the area of the power plant greener through the planting and growing of trees.

Engineer Metodio Turbella, regional director of EMB Davao Region, said the CSMP is one of the methods to effectively offset the carbon dioxide emissions.

"TSI has been very cooperative. Even during the times the power plant has not yet been erected or operated," he said.
