Guimaras is pilot area for DOT market tourism project

THE Department of Tourism (DOT) in Western Visayas has identified Jordan town in Guimaras as its pilot area for its market tourism program.

DOT-Western Visayas Director Helen Catalbas said they will improve and rehabilitate the Jordan's Alimpon public market, which will have two market days -- Wednesday and Sunday -- from what used to be a Sunday only.

“We will already have two market days,” said Catalbas.

The DOT targets the independent travelers who will visit Guimaras for the new project.

"We don't want them to miss the Jordan market," said Catalbas.

The local government of Jordan has initially allocated P12 million for the project, but Jordan Mayor Ruben Corpuz said they might add P10-million budget next year.

The DOT said it will launch the market tourism on May 21 prior to the Manggahan Festival. Tourism officials are expected to attend the launching.

The DOT has identified 20 public markets all over Western Visayas for the market tourism program.
