Beauty and brains: Do we have a chance on Int'l pageants?

THE most-awaited beauty pageant in the country already hailed its new queens to compete for bigger crowns internationally. With Pia Wurtzbach, the Philippines' newest Miss Universe alongside them through their journey, will fate side on our Filipina bets?

As Queen P announced during the coronation night, the Question and Answer portion will determine whether they deserve a title or not. She even described it as her favorite part of the competition because she is naturally "madaldal (talkative)". It's also quite evident in her televised life story which showed that she was jotting down possible questions for the big night and filled three notebooks with her answers before she claimed her price after competing with equally beautiful and intelligent girls in the world.

With Pia putting premium on the candidates' capacity to give an impressive answer, it’s just fitting that we take another look on the performance of the binibinis during the grilling question and answer portion. Here are ten of smartly answered questions.

US Ambassador Sung Kim, chairman of the board of judges, asked Catriona Gray, the Miss Universe Philippines, a pressing issue: “After the devastating war, Marawi is now on its way to recovery. What is your message to the young women of Marawi?”

Gray responded eloquently which also earned her the approval of the audience as Smart Araneta Coliseum roared after she said, "Thank you for that question. My answer and my message to the women is to be strong. As women, we’re the head of the household and we have amazing influence not only in our families, as mothers, sisters and friends, but also in our community. If we could get the women to stay strong and be that image of strength for the children and the people around them, then once the rebuilding is complete and is underway, the morale of the community will stay strong and high. Thank you.”

Binibini 17, Maria Athisa Manalo, who also garnered Miss International title standing next to Gray, almost lost her moment there but was quick enough to give a witty save just before the bell was rang.

Precious Lara Quigaman asked her, “How should a beauty queen respond to ruthless criticism?” and she responded, “A beauty queen should always respond to criticisms constructively. We beauty queens are public figures and we put ourselves in a position to be judged. But nonetheless, we should always, we should always filter which comments we should accept and what we should not. Thank you.”

Here's what Miss Intercontinental Philippines Karen Gallman said, when Quigaman asked, “Do you agree that a third restroom should be built for transgenders? Why or why not?”, “I definitely agree there should be a third restroom for transgender because us women would like a privacy and also with men, and we have a separate room for the transgender. It just serves as an equality and privatization. Thank you.”

The popular athlete Michelle Gumabao also showed she's not just a sporty chick but a queen who can rock her heels as well when she gained the Miss Globe Philippines title with her answer on fighting fake news, “I know that fake news is very rampant nowadays, but in order to fight these, we must first, know what we are reporting, know what we are reading and at the same time, be accountable for what we say, especially online. And I hope that media always filters their news, their resources to always deliver truth and authentic news. Thank you.”

Meanwhile, Eva Psychee Patalinjug crowned Bb. Pilipinas Grand International 2018 was asked, “What is the role of beauty queens in the pursuit of our country’s economic success, if any?”

She answered, “A role of the beauty queen is to be a voice. I am here to make a message to all of you. In these times of uncertainty…taking over our country, we have remained steadfast and have faith in all of its challenges. As a united nation, what we should do is to set aside our political differences, economic and social preferences. Let our love and loyalty to our country rise above all, in the hopes of making a peaceful country. Thank you.”

And of course, our very own Dabawenya Jehza Mae Huelar also showed eloquence as she answered the question, “What do you think is the most important quality of a millennial woman?” vibrantly.

She said, “I think the most important quality a millennial woman have is to have a vision. With her vision, she should have this attitude and perseverance so that she can achieve her goals. And if she’s good at vision, she will be able to express herself freely. So I would hope that all the millennials out here would really adhere to our culture and our tradition so that we can inspire others, we can impact people. Thank you.”

Now, you decide. Shall we have an early toast to celebrate? What do you think? Tell us!
