Ilonggo war veterans cited

FOUR Ilonggo war veterans were recognized during the 14th Iloilo Veterans Memorial Day as part of annual Victory Day Celebration of Panay, Romblon and Guimaras at Battle Monument, Jaro, Iloilo City March 17.

Certificates of appreciation were given to Private First Class Carlos Cercado Osano of Bo. Obrero Lapuz, 99 years old; 2nd Lieutenant Socorro Labaro-Hermano, 97, from Ticud, La Paz; Sergeant Jose Doledo Lobaton, 95, of Laguda, La Paz; and Corporal Trinidad Pahitamo Leocario, 94, from Jaro.

Guest speaker Dr. Engelbert Peralta, youngest son of General Macario Peralta, Jr. who had shown exemplary leadership and gallantry during World War II, shared how he looked up to his hero father.

“No words can say how much I admire Macario Peralta as a father and as a selfless leader. This generation should always remember the bravery and comprehensive intelligence of the Filipino soldiers just to win over Japanese Imperial Armed Forces,” Dr. Peralta said.

The celebration bannered the theme: “The Bravery and Courage of the Filipino Veterans will be always remembered in the hall of fame and pages of history.”

Major General Alfredo Cayton Jr., Veterans Affairs and Management Division chief of Philippine Veterans’ Affairs Office (PVAO) emphasized the importance of giving recognition to the patriotism and gallantry of Filipino soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War II.

“Today is the best time to honor and recognize these people who have shown love for our country. PVAO will continue to administer benefits to our veterans by giving them immediate medical and hospitalization assistance,” Cayton added.

Cong. Jerry P. Treñas, Acting City Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon, City Administrator Hernando Galvez, and Iloilo City Police Office Director Senior Superintendent Henry Biñas attended the activity.
