Trade department eyes to bring MSMEs to int'l food show

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Davao Region plans to bring local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to Taiwan on June to attend the Taiwan International Food Show.

On June 27 to 30, the annual Taiwan International Food Show will once again be held in Manila particularly at the World Trade Center.

According to Manila Economic and Cultural Office (Meco) assistant corporate secretary and executive officer attorney Arthur Abiera, Jr., the event is normally participated by representatives coming from 50 countries worldwide, most of them agricultural countries. He added yearly there are thousands of attendees that grace the event.

This year, Trade and Industry Davao Assistant Regional Director Edwin Banquerigo said they would wish to bring in Davao-based MSMEs to expose them of the modern technology displayed and offered in the food show. Abiera also said they have yet to put a limit to the number of delegates that may come to Taiwan for the food show.

“If you look at it, it supports two things. First, product promotion. Second, there will surely be Business to Business (B2B) matching. The B2B matching will also help on establishing distributor and suppliers relationship, not just only on a one-shot deal but long-range deal. It’s not only about selling the product but also about identifying potential investors to come to the Philippines,” Banquerigo said.

The food show is an annual event in Manila and has since expanded from a 3-show event to a 5-show event now. Meco Trade and Investment Officer Angelo M. Samson said the components of the show involved food processing, health, restaurant, halal, and biotech.

“This is also for local companies looking for food machineries and technology transfer such as packaging among others,” said Samson. He added that other participants from other countries are promoting their food products in the food show by displaying them in their booths where the buyers can directly buy from and negotiate trading.

Banquerigo said they hope to also be given a slot in the program to promote the best and local products of Davao City.

“Even if you are not an exhibitor, it’s good that you are into the food business. Because there you will find equipment that will boost your production, make better packaging, and so you will be able to export more. You will see the products that they are selling there,” said Abiera.
