Resort wear, fabric-on-fabric collections top PWC’s annual show

A 10-PIECE resort wear and three-piece fabric-on-fabric collections were declared the top designs in this year’s graduation show of the Philippine Women’s College (PWC) of Davao Bachelor of Fine Arts Fashion Design Program and Senior High School Fashion Design Strand.

Highlighting the 65th year of its annual fashion graduation show are several designs which drew inspiration from the culture, heritage and identity of Davao’s indigenous peoples.

Of the more than 200 garments and accessories included in the special show, the creativity and ingenuity of Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design graduating student Bea Angela Abrigo and Senior High School Fashion Strand student Mark Lawrence Tamayo stood out. They were declared the Tribute Designers of the Year 2018.

Abrigo’s entry, which she called “Gypsy Hearts,” was inspired by her research on the Tepo Mat weaving tradition of the Sama Dilaut or Badjaos.

Anyone who would like to don a unique yet elegantly-designed resort wear this summer will surely fall inlove with her creations.

In fact, during the show at Abreeza Mall last February 25, judges noted that she must be commended for the quality of execution and presentation, marketability and designer personality.

Her winning has marked the start of her journey in the fashion scene as she is set to showcase her 10-piece collection at the Panasonic Manila Fashion Festival this April together with the Davao Fashion and Design Council Foundation, Inc. (DFDCFI).

She also won a round-trip ticket and hotel accommodation courtesy of Chancey Travel and Tours and a set of garment construction tools from Manila Fashion Supplies.

Aside from being on top of the tilt, she likewise received the HZB-SFAD’s BRENDA, the highest award conferred to students for being the Best Rising and Excelling Newby in Design and the Arts.

Meanwhile, Tamayo showcased his penchant for fabric-on-fabric technique. What is unique about him was his use of the same fabric to create his shredded embellishments, which he accentuated with cut-out mirrors and crystals.

The diversity of his vision of things made Tamayo to come by 21 graduating students in the Senior High School program.

As a global platform, TRIBUte has become a launching pad for PWC design students, who would become part of the different sectors of the industry after graduation.

During the show, past winners, who are now making a name in the international fashion arena, were honored as well.

The sold-out collection of Che Aranjuez in Ikons London Fashion Week 2018 was not missed, as well as the record-breaking feat of Jun Artajo and Andi Amora at the Japan International Fashion Design Competition last year.
