Bulacan massacre suspect caught

POLICE said Thursday that the man suspected of killing five family members in San Jose Del Monte City, Bulacan has been detained.

Carmelino Ibañez, 26, a construction worker, has confessed to his involvement in the murder of Auring Dizon, 58; her daughter Estrella Carlos, 28; and Carlos' children Donnie, 11; Ella, 7 and Dexter Jr., 1 before dawn Tuesday, June 27.

"When the suspect was presented in front of his mother and sister, nag-appeal 'yung mother and sister (niya for him) to tell the truth. Doon na siya nagsabi na pinatay niya ang buong pamilya," said Police Regional Office 3 director Chief Superintendent Aaron Aquino.

According to the suspect, Aquino said, he was on his way home after a drinking session with friends when he heard a voice urging him to enter the family's residence in Barangay Sto. Cristo.

He said Ibañez also admitted he was high on drugs when he committed the crime and could no longer remember if he did it all alone.

"When you mix alcohol with shabu, it's very dangerous. That's the worst ang kalalabasan," said Aquino.

Recounting what he did, Ibañez said he first saw Auring sleeping at the living room where he stabbed her to death before raping her.

He then stabbed Estrella to death and raped her too.

Ibañez said he did not intend to kill the three children in their room upstairs but he panicked he heard their voices.

Based on the autopsy examination conducted by the Philippine National Police crime laboratory, Estrella sustained 45 stab wounds in different parts of her body; Auring sustained 32 stab injuries, while the children Donnie, Ella and Dexter sustained 15, 19 and five stab wounds.

To recall, it was the Estrella's husband, Dexter Carlos Sr., who had discovered the bodies of the victims after he arrived from his night shift as a security guard.

Ibañez is now detained at the San Jose Del Monte police station. (SunStar Philippines)
