La Castellana farmer wins P1M in raffle

A SMALL farmer from La Castellana, Negros Occidental won P1-million cash in the first grand raffle draw of Central De La Carlota Inc. (Caci)’s “Milyonaryo Ka sa Central La Carlota” promo.

Ruby Gimay Alfonso, 51, of Hacienda Pacita, owns about a hectare of land and produces 55 tons of sugarcane.

She became an instant millionaire during the raffle draw held at the compound of the Asociacion de Agricultores de La Carlota y Pontevedra Inc. (AALCPI) in La Carlota City on March 23.

Together with her husband Herminigildo, who sometimes drives the delivery truck to transport their canes, the family has been into sugar farming since 1985. Since then, they have been milling their products with Caci.

Alfonso said they did not expect the huge blessing since they were already delivering their last remaining sugarcanes when the promo started.

They actually had two tickets for the remaining 9.7 tons they milled, she said.

“Truly, God has been good to us and we are grateful to the management of Caci for this blessing,” Alfonso said, adding that “we can finally have our old house repaired while the rest of the money will be used to put up a small grocery store to help augment our daily needs.”

Caci is a subsidiary of sugar and ethanol producer Roxas Holdings Inc. (RHI), which also operates bioethanol plant Roxol Bioenergy Corp. (RBC) situated as well in Barangay Nagasi, La Carlota City.

The firm, in a press statement, said more than two million worth of prizes will be given in a series of draws, which will run until next month, each time a total of 60 tons of cane is milled with it.

The “Milyonaryo Ka sa Central La Carlota” promo is a means of giving back to the partner-planters who have been supportive of the sugar central over the years, it added.

Esteban Coscolluela, RHI vice president and Caci general manager, said the promo is the company’s expression of appreciation and gratitude to their partners.

“Caci and our mother company, RHI, value the long years of partnership of our stakeholders in the industry and we nurture this relationship as we look forward to more productive partnerships ahead,” Coscolluela added.

Aside from Alfonso, there were also five winners of P100,000 each, and 10 winners of P50,000 each in consolation prizes.

Moreover, all winning tickets shall undergo validation and verification prior to the actual granting of prizes.

Rox Cuadra, field operations department head of Caci and raffle project coordinator, said that “organizers reserve the right to decide on all matters related to the project and all decisions of the management shall be final.”

The promo is open to all Caci planter-members who are duly registered under AALCPI or the La Carlota Planters Association Inc. (LCPAI), the firm said.

All single cane deliveries of eight to 10 tons are entitled to two tickets and any incremental increase of every five tons more shall qualify for another ticket each time, it added.

The draw, meanwhile, was witnessed by Department of Trade and Industry official, representatives of two associations, and executives and personnel of Caci. (EPN)
