Gov’t troops clash with NPAs in Guihulngan

THE 79th Infantry Battalion (IB) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Central Command (Centcom) clashed with members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental last Friday.

A platoon of the 79th IB chanced upon a group of armed men who engaged them in a 30-minute gunfight.

“The NPA keep on creating trouble in the area,” Col. Medel Aguilar, Centcom’s assistant chief of the unified staff for civil military operations, said.
Under the leadership of 2nd Lieutenant Norman Sorilla, the troops engaged the rebels.

A reinforcement group under 1st Lieutenant Alex Bunagan chased the rebels from Sitio Agpapatao, Barangay Sandayao to Sitio Sumil, Barangay Binubuhan, which led to another encounter.

After the clash, troops recovered one M14 rifle with live bullets, hundreds of ammunition for M60 machine gun and jungle packs containing documents of high intelligence value.

The AFP and the police are in full alert status after the NPA and other rebel groups continue with their activities in different parts of the country. (JOB)
