More schools seek tuition hike

A list of private schools who applied for increase in tuition and other school fees has been released by the Department of Education 7 (DepEd 7) and the Commission on Higher Education Region (Ched) 7.

DepEd 7 said 313 of the region’s 856 schools have applied for an increase in tuition for the school year (SY) 2017-2018, of which 72 were granted.

Out of the 224 schools in Cebu Province, 88 applied for an increase, of which 17 were approved.

Sixteen of the schools will have no increase and 55 applications are still being processed.

In Cebu City, out of 189 schools, 60 applied for a tuition increase. Of this, 21 were approved.

Eleven schools will have no increase while 27 applications are still being processed.

DepEd noted a rise in the number of schools who applied for an increase for SY 2017-2018 compared to the last school year.

Out of 778 schools in the region, 131 schools applied and 68 were granted their request for an increase.

Last year, 21 schools from Cebu Province and 31 from Cebu City applied for an increase. Eleven applications from Cebu Province and 15 from Cebu City were granted.

Ched 7 also listed eight schools whose applications for tuition increase was approved. The increase is between five and 12 percent.

Dr. Edward Umaña of DepEd 7 said “70 percent of the incremental proceeds in tuition fee shall be allocated for teachers’ salary and benefits, 20 percent for school facilities and the 10 percent for ROI (return of investment).” (TLN)
