HUNDREDS of individuals were displaced from three village in Matina, Davao City as flood rose to alarming levels after an hour-long downpour of rain brought by the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) affecting Mindanao.
According to regional Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-Davao Region spokesperson McAdrian Cubero, they have recorded a total of 417 individuals who fled from their homes and took refuge in various evacuation areas after a heavy rain started around 7 p.m. on Thursday evening, July 6.
In Matina Crossing, at least 75 families or 287 individuals sought for temporary shelter at the Barangay Hall while around seven families or 35 families from Kilometer 7, Matina Pangi stayed at Badon Compound Gym.
There were 19 families or 95 individuals from Matina Aplaya who were forced to evacuate. All of them, meanwhile, have returned to their respective houses as the flood subsided.
The residents live in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
The water level in Matina river swelled and reached critical level which indicates pre-emptive evacuation among the residents.
Several people were also stranded because of the rain after the level of water reached knee-high. (JCR)
