Personality profile: The hotel as her home

Personality profile: The hotel as her home

WHEN you have passion for work you don’t work a day in your life

This is how the newly-promoted general manager of Park Inn by Radisson is living her life.

With over 22 years of experience as a hotelier, Emelyn Mauhay-Rosales, has gone through a tough but worthy way to where she is now.

Immediately after earning a degree in Bachelor of Science in Tourism at the University of the Philippines-Diliman as a Cum Laude, Emelyn found herself in the tourism industry as a travel agent clueless of where she is heading.

“I was a travel agent for three years. The travel agencies look into the whole tourism industry, so I considered it as a chance to choose which direction of the industry I will go. And after years of observation, I strongly admired the hoteliers, so I decided to become one,” she said.

With a solid educational foundation (earned her Master’s Degree in Business Administration at Ateneo de Manila University) and dedication to make a mark in the industry, the 43-year old hotelier has gained great exposures in the hotel industry and was able to work in well-known companies in the Philippines and even in other countries.

Throughout her journey, Emelyn highlighted that what made her love the job even more year after year is the gratification she got from the work.

“My principle in my career is to never stop learning, and with learning comes sacrifices and investments whether it may be time, money, or trust in people. Working in this very dynamic industry pushes me to challenge myself in everything I do,” she said.

It was not her dream to head a hotel, especially as big as Park Inn by Radisson Davao, but it seems that fate has a bigger plan for Emelyn than just settle in the sales and marketing department.

“I had a vision before, I know where I’m going to but this is not part of my dream, I always wanted to be just in sales. When they gave me this position, I was first hesitant because I didn’t know if I really wanted the post, but I accepted it because of the thought that through this I can learn a lot more about the industry,” she said.

She admitted that she is not all-knowing especially on engineering, finance, housekeeping and other areas in hotel operations. However, she also thought that one does not need to be omniscient.

“As the general manager, you have to oversee everything, but I thought these are just challenges,” she said.

On how she is handling things as the head, Emelyn said she views the hotel as her big house that needs to be managed well so her family can live in comfort and peace.

Emelyn is one of the only four women general managers across the entire Park Inn Hotel group globally.

She also shared that the fun and dynamic nature of the job is what made her stay in the industry for over two decades.

“It is never a boring job. You get to meet different people under different circumstances with different personalities which can boost your confidence. Every day is not the same. Also, with my work it also entails me to travel, it increases my handling experience in different situations,” she said.

Emelyn joined Park Inn by Radisson Davao last May 2015 as the Director of Sales and Marketing. In 2016, she assumed the role of Hotel - OIC and eventually became the Hotel Manager. Because of her dedication and passion she recently got promoted as the General Manager last January 1, 2018.

Getting her way to where she is now, the general manager, further shared that to be effective and happy in whatever one is doing, one must be guided with a principle that is centered on passion, discipline and integrity.
