CEBU City needs a decent football field or a football stadium to host the Global Cebu FC in the Philippine Football League.
This is to stop all the complaints from Global Cebu opponents just like Ceres Negros FC coach Risto Vidakovic and team manager James Dinsay before and after their match last Wednesday at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).
For several months, the CCSC has been guarded and trimmed by the Cebu Football Association (CFA) just to be ready for the Wednesday match.
My former team captain at the University of San Carlos (USC) Golden Booters Dino Musni was the key man of the CFA in the field preparation for the PFL match.
Musni years ago transformed the dust bowl of the CCSC to a green field for two Azkals matches. This time with less than two months to prepare, he once again led the transformation of the CCSC to a green field.
It was, however, not enough for the losing Ceres side as their coaches, players and fans complained that the field was not playable. Global Cebu did not complain of course because they were the host and they won the match.
The Cebu football community came in droves last Wednesday evening to support Global. Can the community organize and tell Mayor Tomas Osmeña to build a football stadium to host professional and international matches?
The politicians have been promising the Cebuanos of a better playing venue for too long now. CCSC is over used. The pitch turns into a dustbowl right after the Sinulog every year. Biñan and Digos are small cities and yet they have excellent football facilities.
Cebu City is a rich city and it is a shame for Cebuano politicians to deny the Cebu football community of a decent playing venue. I was still a young man with a head full of hair when the CCSC was rebuilt for the 1994 Palarong Pambansa. When can I see a new stadium for Cebu? When the politicians stop squabbling maybe next century?
