Earthquakes hit Cordillera

EARTHQUAKES jolted the two provinces of Abra and Mountain province Saturday morning, July 8, with a 3.6 magnitude record from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Mountain Province felt the quake around 2:53 a.m. while in Abra, a magnitude 2.2 quake was also recorded at 3:30 a.m.

A third quake with a magnitude 2.1 was felt in Besao town also in Mt. Province at 6:29 a.m. with a depth of 40 kilometers.

The epicenter of the quake in Mountain Province was determined at the vicinity of Bontoc with a depth of 11 kilometers while in Abra, the epicenter was near Tubo town.

The Cordillera Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (DRRMC) reported no damage or injuries and said no aftershocks are expected.

In the region, earthquake awareness is being stressed with scheduled drills spearheaded by the Cordillera office of the Office of Civil Defense, in partnership with the City Government and various stakeholders in preparation for disaster.

Concepts of earthquake preparation as to the duck-cover and hold technique, evacuation plans and procedures are to be imbibed among residents.

Safety measures for those outside are instructed to “duck, cover and hold,” and proceed to an open area. Motorists in moving vehicles are advised to stop and get out, for the duration of the siren sound.
