The choices we make define us

ALONG with our lifestyle are our choices. There are harmless choices like our preferences for fashion, hairstyle, gadgets, music etc. Individualism is what prompts us to have different choices. However, on the other side of the spectrum, there are choices that are unacceptable. There are people whose choices in life get them into trouble. Our city jails are full not only to their maximum capacity but rather there is now an urgent need to build more detention and rehabilitation centers. Packed like sardines are the drug pushers, robbers, swindlers, thieves and other criminals whose choices are regrettable. Oftentimes, the friends they chose got them jailed.

We are defined by our choices. By definition, people are referred to by their chosen profession depending on what they do as health practitioners, as engineers, architects, educators, scientists, plumbers, technicians, social workers and so on and so forth. Then people are also defined by their contribution to the community in their chosen advocacy as environmentalists, preservationists, animal activists and volunteers in various fields.

We have developed habits because we found them to be comfortable choices like the habits of smoking, drinking, gambling, playing electronic games and other addictive behaviors. On a positive note, there are habits that are remarkable in a sense because these choices make us better persons.

Some choices are not like drills that we can benefit from by doing them over and over again. Sometimes we do not have the luxury to make a choice. We have to make a decisive stand. And because we live in an interactive world, our decisions affect others.

When we choose to be law breakers, there are victims who suffer the consequence of our choices. On the other side of the equation, when we choose to do great things, there are beneficiaries who will always remember the legacy of our choices.

Our God-given “free will” allows us to make choices. Life is made up of choices. At the end of the day, our life choices either make us or break us. According to God’s Little Instruction Book, the greatest possession we have is the 24 hours directly in front of us. We then have the chance to ask for forgiveness for the wrongdoing. Discernment is of utmost importance in making choices. The power of the Holy Spirit can help us in our discernment. I firmly believe this is what we need today… discernment.
