Furparents and furkids

JUST like what a parent does to his child, a furparent also makes an effort in making his furbaby feel significant. And just like any proud stage mother and father, furparents engage in beautiful experiences to showcase their sense of pride and admiration for their four legged, furry children. Most of the time, they share the fun even on stage.

Dogs of various lines and equally beautiful made up owners paraded in a ramp and stance competition. The event converged the strong supporters of local dog shows and agility exhibitions to promote Filipino values and tradition through well thought costumes, each piece highlighting either tourist sites, famous hand made products and the well decorated barong and some, in great looking "hablon."

It was such a treat to sit down as among the judges as I, myself is a self confessed dog lover. My 23-kilogram cinnamon and 21-kilogram imported line chow chows are my source of relief after a busy day at the office. Adding to the pack is black poodle, who, ironically is called neon and a mixed shih tzu and mini pincher who I baptized as "Fifa" in celebration of the world cup in Brazil years back.

At the organizing table was Cutz and Cuddles Grooming and Pet Supplies Shop, one of the more responsible dog salons in Bacolod City. Its operator, Phoebe, owns a family of dogs and keeps a pack of "snow balls" in her home.

When my furkids where younger, I would send them to her pets salon and had them groomed. The kind of dedication she provides is beyond admirable, proving her love for dogs and the satisfaction and loyalty that comes along with it.

The score sheets included important factors in the pageantry: ease and discipline, novelty and creativity, originality, overall performance and look and a special award for the most artistic owner. It was such a feat to look at each partner expressing confidence and excitement, just like parents to their children.

The winners are Megan (shih tzu), champion; Sassy (maltese x JRT), first runner-up; Alexandra (yorkie), second runner-up; Roxy, (best in costume handler category); Alexandra (yorkie) and Rowel (best andem).

Consolation prize winners went to Mhyly (shih tzu); Princess (shih tzu); Cuddle (chow chow); Tyra (shih tzu) and Bella (shih tzu).

I am reminded of this golden thought: “If you want loyalty, get a dog.”

For many, it starts from there and which eventually gives way to building a new family that is full of love and giving. Dogs are no longer best friends, they have become furkids, just like our children who we love without conditions.
