THE Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) opened the 15th season with a coaches’ and team managers’ meeting at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.

Commmissioner Felix Tiukinhoy Jr., together with the head of the secretariat Rico Navarro, deputy commissioner Danny Duran and screening committee head Dioscoro Himotas, met the coaches and team managers to talk about the tournament that is set to open on Aug. 1.

Tiukinhoy also emphasized giving the coaches a refresher course on the league rules.

“As coaches and team managers it would be your obligation to uphold the dignity of the school you represent. You are supposed to be the role models of your players, your student body, your supporters. Please conduct yourself with dignity inside the court,” Tiukinhoy said.

The commissioner reminded the coaches to tell their student athletes to observe the proper dress code, especially when watching another team’s game.

Tiukinhoy also said coaches need to be aware of the various unsportsmanlike actions that may lead to a penalty for players and coaches alike.

The monetary fine is also expected to increase this season.

The new coaches this season are Gary Cortes of the University of the Visayas (UV) and Albert Alocillo of the comebacking University of Southern Philippines Foundation in college and Abel Bungcaras of UV, Ferdinand Pineda of University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and Rey Lubguban of the Southwestern University in high school.

Aside from Lubguban, who once played for SWU in the 80s, the other new coaches have served as assistant coaches before their appointment as head coaches.

Cortes served as Felix “Donbel” Belano Jr.’s lieutenant last season; Alocillo once served as assistant coach at the Cebu Eastern College Dragons from 2010 to 2012 and USPF Baby Panthers last season; Bungcaras was Delfin Pepito’s understudy for several years.
